OPERATION HOMECOMING

op. homecoming

Operation Homecoming is a documentary based on a wartime writing initiative sponsored by the NEA. The content of the film is based on the 2006 Random House collection of wartime letters, poems, and essays. The book was listed in the Washington Post Book World as one of the best nonfiction books of 2006, and the documentary was nominated for an Academy Award. The film centers on Gulf War troops who write about their wartime experiences, and serves to challenge indifference toward those who fight and have fought in Iraq.

Portland’s own Chris Koelle contributed the art for the “Men In Black” section, which underscores an essay by Colby Buzzell, and is one of the most visually engaging moments in the film. The LA Times gave it a nod when they said, “Robbins [the director] tries mightily to find unique ways to visually portray each reading, and some, such as an animated sequence that is the film’s highlight, do capture a sense of the writing itself and the traumas of the experience.”

You can watch the trailer or purchase the film on Itunes. You can also purchase the film from The Documentary Group.
