My New Favorite Thing

This clip is from F for Fake, Orson Welles’ documentary about art forgery, deception, and the unreliability of experts.  The film partly suggests that the art market promotes the artist above the art.  Suddenly people don’t purchase art that gives pleasure, but rather they purchase art that opinion makers regard as important.  Welles contrasts art born from the cult of personality with Chartres Cathedral, an “anonymous glory.”  At any rate, whether you agree or disagree it is a treat to hear such fine language, and an additional treat to hear the gentle condescension in the great Welles’ voice when he describes man as “a poor forked radish.”

The fella at the beginning speaks for about a minute, Welles comes after.
