Cowboy it up!

A few of this week’s 4×6 cards.

photo

For this week’s post we cast the net a little wider and opened up submissions to anyone in the company. I think we’ve got quite a catch. There were a few rules. The first was that the art had to deal with cowboys. This was pretty closely followed. The second was that the pieces had to be done on the back of a 4×6 card. This was mostly followed (with a few exceptions). The last rule was that computer manipulation had to be kept to a minimum. Basically, one could use it to adjust the levels, but that was it. This was largely followed, but Matt Mantooth, our chief designer, understandably ignored this one, so did our lead interactive designer/ developer and resident genius Mark Johnson.

I think it’s a pretty good showing. Hope you like it.

Eastwood

“Buzzards have to eat, same as worms.” This contribution is from Paul Johnson, our Chief Operations Officer.

Cute-slinger

This atomic explosion of cuteness is from our intern Hallie.

Mad Dog

“I’ll hunt you down and shoot you like a duck.”–Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen
This contributiton from Chris Koelle, one of our master illustrators.

Kowboy

Programmer Ben Kammer stripped himself from technology for a little while and grabbed the right side of his brain and a pencil to draw this fella.

Clint

Chief Designer Matt Mantooth. “Inspired by the work of Shepard Fairey and Hatch Show Print. If Eastwood had campaign posters to join his gang I know whose side I’d be on.”

Six Big Ones

Aaron Greene, our photographer, sound designer, composer, IT guy, and official gun drawer.

cowboy canyon

This one and the next are mine.

Slow Draw

“Ouch!” –Billy the Kid

Steve

“We deal in lead, friend.” –Steve McQueen.
This one and the next from illustrator Cory Godbey.

Yul-Tide Raw Hide

“Places you’re tied down to–none. People with a hold on you–none. Men you step aside for–none.” –Yul Brynner.

Gun Slinger Cards

This from Justin Gerard who dipped his 4×6 card in tea and drew himself up an Ace of Spades.

Last, but certainly not least is Mark Johnson’s awesome submission. Here’s his description: “The images tumbling through the scene are pulled from flickr images tagged with ‘cowboy’ and ‘west.’ You can click on one of the “tumble-weeds” to view a larger image.”

And that’s our cowboy post. Giddyup!

Well for cryin’ in a bucket. I love that Paul Johnson and Ben Kammer rocked this out. So what happens if Simon and Schuster calls us up and asks our COO to illustrate a children’s book?

I guess he’ll have to supervise himself.

How does one go about buying a print of their favorite piece?

There are only originals I’m afraid, and there really aren’t any plans for prints. Though I will say that Justin is looking for someone to commission him to do a whole deck of gunslinger cards–so if you know anyone …

However – stay tuned for the Portland Zine. We’re thinking about putting out a compilation of our favorite blog posts, images, etc. in a monthly or bi-monthly Zine. So we’ll keep you posted.

Wonderful work as always. Two things I’d still like to see those:
1. Charlton Heston…I miss that guy.
2. Those tea card aces available in the Portland Store. :)
