Narrative, Mike Tyson, and Being the Hero of Your Own Life.

Charles Dickens’ novel David Copperfield opens with an elegant sentence: “Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show.”

It is a tragic thing when a guy ceases to be the hero of his life and slides into a supporting role or worse, becomes the antagonist. I think this assumption controls public perception. The public can forgive many things, but it has little forgiveness for a man that ruins his story.

Few people have ruined their story more than Mike Tyson. …

1. People who catch things in their mouth.

2. The expression “I’m in!”

3. People who run, jump, and slide across the hood of a car.

4. Slow motion of any kind.

5. People who drop guns that are out of ammo (in slow motion preferrably.)

6. People who drop guns that are out of ammo and then grab from their belt two more guns with ammo.

7. People who jump long distances and move their arms in circles.

8. The expression, “Listen Jack!” This works especially well when the person to whom they are referring isn’t named …

G.I.J.O.E.

In 1942 the military magazines Yank and The Army Weekly ran a syndicated column by cartoonist David Breger. He called it G.I. Joe. Playing on the military acronym for “Government Issue,” G.I. Joe became byword for the common American foot soldier. The term was later the title of a film starring Burgess Meredith.

In the 1960s, Hasbro resurrected the name for their toyline. The soldier figure trademark was, “G.I. JOE, A Real American Hero.” By the 1970s G.I. JOE sported a fuzzy beard and “Kung Fu Grip.” He was less worried about fighting the enemy …
